Music is one of the most personal parts of your wedding day.
Long after the flowers have faded and the cake has been eaten, people often remember the atmosphere your music created. The right songs can make guests smile, laugh, sing along and even shed a tear. The wrong music can leave moments feeling flat or awkward.
As a professional Wedding Host and Magician, I've had the privilege of being part of hundreds of weddings. I've seen everything from intimate ceremonies with twenty guests through to celebrations with several hundred people.
One thing I've learnt is this...
The best wedding music isn't always the most popular. It's the music that means something to you.
With that in mind, here are my recommendations for each part of your day.
Choosing the right music helps create the perfect atmosphere from the moment your guests arrive.
Before Your Guests Arrive
Many couples spend months choosing their entrance music but completely forget about the atmosphere before the ceremony begins.
Your guests are arriving, greeting family members, finding their seats and beginning to relax.
Gentle instrumental music or acoustic versions of your favourite songs work beautifully during this time.
You don't want anything overpowering—you simply want people to feel comfortable.
Walking Down the Aisle
This is probably the most emotional moment of the day.
Choose something that genuinely means something to you.
I've seen couples choose everything from traditional classical music to modern acoustic covers.
There isn't a right or wrong answer.
If hearing a particular song instantly reminds you of each other, that's probably the right choice.
Signing the Register
The signing of the register is often overlooked.
It's a lovely opportunity to include one or two meaningful songs while your photographer captures some beautiful photographs.
Many couples choose softer love songs during this section of the ceremony.
Leaving the Ceremony
Once you've said "I do", it's time to celebrate.
This is where upbeat music really works.
As guests clap and cheer, an energetic song immediately changes the atmosphere from emotional to celebratory.
Drinks Reception
This is one of my favourite parts of the day.
Guests are relaxed.
The pressure has gone.
Everyone is chatting, enjoying a drink and catching up with family they may not have seen for years.
This is also where I spend much of my time performing close-up magic, entertaining guests while photographs continue.
Music during this part of the day should never dominate the conversations.
Think relaxed, happy background music rather than party music.
Your Wedding Breakfast Entrance
If there's one moment that deserves a fantastic soundtrack, it's this one.
As your guests take their seats, everyone turns towards the entrance waiting to welcome you into the room for the very first time as a married couple.
One thing I always encourage is getting guests involved.
Waving napkins, clapping in time with the music and cheering as the couple enter creates an incredible atmosphere.

They're upbeat, instantly recognisable and put smiles on people's faces within seconds.

Background Music During Dinner
One of the questions I'm asked surprisingly often is:
"How much music do we actually need?"
My recommendation is simple.
Prepare around four hours of music.
That may sound like more than you'll need, but weddings rarely run exactly to schedule.
Having a longer playlist means you never have to worry about the music suddenly stopping halfway through the meal.
One couple recently prepared approximately four hours of carefully chosen Spotify music for their wedding breakfast.
It was a perfect solution.
My biggest tip...
Don't rely entirely on an internet connection.
Many venues have excellent Wi-Fi.
Some don't.
Likewise, mobile phone signal can vary dramatically depending on the location.
If you're using Spotify, download your playlist for offline listening before the wedding.
It's a tiny job that can save a huge amount of stress.
Speeches
During speeches, less is more.
Your background music should fade well before the first speaker stands up.
As your Wedding Host, I'll always ensure the room is quiet before introducing each speaker and handing over the microphone.
Good sound is just as important as good speeches.
Cake Cutting
The cake cutting usually lasts only a few minutes.
Choose something upbeat and fun.
It's another fantastic opportunity for photographs, so keep the atmosphere light and celebratory.
Your First Dance
This is your moment.
Forget trends.
Forget what everyone else thinks.
Choose the song that tells your story.
It doesn't matter whether it's Elvis Presley, Ed Sheeran or something completely unexpected.
If it means something to the two of you, it's the right choice.
Evening Party
As the evening begins, the energy naturally changes.
This is where your DJ or live band can really come into their own.
The best DJs don't simply play songs.
They read the room.
They know when to slow things down and when to fill the dance floor.
Common Mistakes I See
After hosting hundreds of weddings, there are a few things that regularly catch couples out.
Not preparing enough music
Always have more music than you think you'll need.
Relying on Wi-Fi
Download playlists beforehand.
Technology doesn't always behave itself on wedding days.
Choosing songs because they're popular
Choose songs because they're meaningful.
Your guests will remember the emotion far more than whether your playlist followed the latest trends.
Forgetting the transitions
Some of the most memorable moments aren't the obvious ones.
Think about:
entering the wedding breakfast
cake cutting
leaving the ceremony
signing the register
Those transitions help your day flow beautifully.
